Platform Bed vs Box Spring: Do You Need One?
If you're shopping for a new bed, you'll quickly run into a question that confuses a lot of people: do you need a box spring, or will a platform bed do? The short answer is that for most modern mattresses, a platform bed is all you need — and a box spring is an extra cost and extra height you can skip. Here's a clear, complete explanation, plus how to choose the right base for your mattress and avoid the common mistakes.
What is a platform bed?
A platform bed has a built-in supportive surface — either solid panels or closely spaced slats — that holds your mattress directly. There's no need for a separate box spring underneath. The look is low, clean and modern, and you lose the bulky height of a traditional bed-plus-box-spring stack. Many platform beds also build in storage, floating nightstands or a low, contemporary profile that suits today's interiors.
What does a box spring do?
A box spring is a wooden frame with springs or a rigid surface that sits between a traditional bed frame and the mattress. Its original jobs were to add height, provide a flat foundation, and absorb some shock for old innerspring mattresses sitting on a basic metal frame. It made sense in that era — but with modern mattresses (memory foam, latex, hybrids) and supportive platform bases, that shock-absorbing role is largely obsolete.

Do platform beds need a box spring?
No. A platform bed is designed to support the mattress on its own, so adding a box spring is redundant — and it would raise the bed awkwardly high. This is true for memory foam, latex, hybrid and most modern innerspring mattresses. Always check your mattress warranty (a few brands specify a foundation type), but the vast majority are perfectly happy on a solid or closely slatted platform. If anything, a firm platform gives foam mattresses better, more even support than an old sagging box spring.
Platform bed advantages
- Modern, low profile — a clean, contemporary look.
- No box spring to buy — saves money and a bulky extra layer.
- Strong, even support — great for foam and hybrid mattresses, which can sag on poor foundations.
- Storage options — drawers or lift-up storage are easy to build into a platform base.
- Stability — a solid platform tends to be quieter and sturdier than a mattress-on-box-spring stack.

When might you still want a box spring?
Only in specific cases: if you have a traditional metal frame that's designed to hold one, or you simply prefer a higher bed (some people like to sit down onto a taller mattress) and don't want a taller platform. Even then, a platform bed built to your preferred height is usually the cleaner solution — you get the height you want without an extra component.
What about slat spacing?
This is the detail that matters most. For foam and hybrid mattresses, slats should be no more than about 3 inches apart (or use a solid surface) to support the mattress evenly and protect the warranty — widely spaced slats can let foam sag between them over time. Innerspring mattresses are more forgiving, but close slats or a solid base are always a safe bet. We build our platform bases to the right specification for your mattress type so you never have to worry about it.
Height: how high should a platform bed be?
Bed height is partly comfort, partly style. A low platform (around 6–12 inches to the mattress top of the frame) reads modern and minimalist; a taller platform feels more traditional and is easier to get in and out of. Add your mattress thickness to the frame height to find the total. Because we build to order, you can choose the exact height that's comfortable for you.

Frequently asked questions
Do platform beds need a box spring?
No. A platform bed supports the mattress on its own with solid panels or slats, so a box spring is unnecessary.
Can you put any mattress on a platform bed?
Yes — memory foam, latex, hybrid and most innerspring mattresses work well. Check that slats are close enough (about 3 inches) for foam mattresses.
Is a platform bed better than a box spring?
For most modern mattresses, yes — it gives strong, even support, a cleaner low-profile look, and saves the cost of a box spring.
Are platform beds good for memory foam?
Yes, as long as the base is solid or closely slatted to support the foam evenly.
How high should a platform bed be?
It's a matter of comfort and style — lower for a modern look, taller for easier getting in and out. We build to your preferred height.
