Today's Project: Slabbing Oak, Maple, Willow Burl & Black Walnut Logs

Preparing Material for One-of-a-Kind Furniture
Today, we’re milling an exceptional batch of hardwood logs — oak, maple, willow burl, and black walnut — some reaching up to 15 feet long and 5 feet wide. These massive logs are being turned into beautiful live edge slabs, perfect for future custom furniture projects — including our most requested item: the live edge table made to order.
How the Process Works
Turning raw logs into finished slabs requires experience, precision, and the right equipment. Our wide-format bandsaw allows us to work with logs of this scale while preserving as much character as possible.
The process includes:
-
Cleaning and inspecting the log
-
Choosing the optimal cutting direction to reveal the best grain
-
Carefully slabbing while maintaining natural edges
-
Drying (air-dried, kiln-dried, or vacuum dried, depending on the project)
Why Live Edge Slabs Are So Valuable
Unlike standard lumber, every slab is a unique piece of nature — showcasing organic shapes, grain flow, knots, and natural imperfections. These features make live edge tables made to order truly special: no two pieces are ever the same.
